International 4-H experience makes impact

Janet Rodekohr, retired Extension marketing specialist, shares memories from a special international trip as a 4-H'er.

When I was 20, I represented my state and the U.S. as a 4-H youth exchange delegate to Finland in 1971. My Madison County Extension agent, Mr. Lowe, wanted to help raise funds for me. While I was in Finland, Mr. Lowe arranged to have the Battle Creek 4-H Beef Show dedicated to me since I had shown beef during my 4-H years.

They raised $100 for me, which I used to take a side trip to Leningrad, Russia, during my exchange. The six months in Finland, the week in Leningrad and the support of my 4-H friends helped me see the world outside of my hometown and feel a part of a world community. It was life-changing.
