1927: 4-H pledge and motto are adopted

State 4-H leaders adopt the national 4-H pledge and motto at the first National 4-H Camp held in Washington, D.C.

Otis Hall, Kansas State 4-H Leader, was responsible for the original wording of the 4-H pledge. It remained unchanged until 1973, when it was revised to include "and my world" at the end.

4-H pledge:

"I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
my heart to greater loyalty,
my hands to larger service,
and my health to better living...
for my club, my community, my country and my world."

4-H motto:

"To make the best better."
